The problem

THE PROBLEM

IMG_8001.jpg

Polo in England has an extraordinary foundation. The Pony Club is the most powerful recruitment tool for young polo players anywhere in the world. Girls make up the majority of young polo plays. The talent is there. The question is why we keep losing it.

90%

OF UK RIDERS ARE WOMEN

50%+

OF JUNIOR POLO PLAYERS ARE WOMEN

>10%

OF POLO PLAYERS BY THERE LATE TEENS ARE WOMEN

WHAT CAUSES THE DROP OUT?

The drop-off is gradual, structural and preventable. As boys develop physically, they dominate the roles that build confidence and skill, hit-ins, penalties, ride-offs, No3 and No4. Girls leave because the game stops giving them room to grow.

Until puberty, boys and girls are broadly matched physically. From age 13 that changes. By 14-17, boys have on average 50% greater upper limb strength and 30% greater lower limb strength. By 18, the average boy can throw three times further than the average girl. In a stick-and-ball sport, that gap matters. This is not opinion - it is physiology.
